Parent Education Classes
Our parent education classes aim to prepare expectant parents for pregnancy, birth and early parenthood.
I provide this information over 3 sessions that are held in your home.
We know that you are all really busy and making time to attend “classes” can be a challenge. We also know that sometimes, you feel a little embarrassed to ask questions in front of others. So, all our private antenatal classes are just for you and your partner or close family. No strangers.
Having this information means you can be more prepared – physically, emotionally, and practically. This can give you more confidence.
It also means you can start to think about your options and choices. You can be better prepared and have a greater understanding of what is happening and why.
What is involved with each session?
Session One:
Preparing for birth
- What is a birth plan?
- What to pack and what not to pack
- Thinking about location, comforts, waterbirth, movement, environment, oxytocin release
- Optimal fetal positioning, Birth ball, Yoga, Pilates
- Nutrition in early labour/prelabour
- Braxton hicks, coping in the latent phase
- Stages of labour
- Induction of labour
- Planning an ELCS
- When to call the midwife/ birthing unit
- Role of birth partner
- Perineal Massage and reducing OASI
- Membrane sweep
- Colostrum harvesting
Session Two:
Birth
- Recap on stages of labour and when to call the midwife/ birthing unit
- Pain relief options – tens, water, massage, aromatherapy, movement, entonox, opioid injections and epidural
- Best positions for labour and birth
- Spontaneous birth
- Instrumental birth
- Caesarean birth
- Induction of labour
- VBAC
- 3rd stage of labour
- Delayed cord clamping (who, when, how)
- 3rd stage potential problems- MROP, PPH, EUA, Infection
- Perineal trauma and stitches
- Skin to skin with baby
- The ‘Golden hour’
Session Three:
Feeding & Postnatal
- Skin to skin
- Breast feeding – Getting off to the best start. Positioning and attachment, frequency, problem solving, tongue tie
- Formula feeding – making up feeds, equipment
- Expressing colostrum/ expressing breastmilk
- The first night at home
- Maternal nutrition and rest
- Emotional wellbeing in the postnatal period
- Possible separation of mum and baby
- Routine postnatal care at home
- Baby screening – NIPE, hearing, NBBS ( Newborn screening – NHS)
- Jaundice
- Cord care
- ICON (Parents – ICON: Babies cry, you can cope)
- Safe sleeping ( Safer sleep information | The Lullaby Trust)
How much does it cost?
My Parent Classes are done in the comfort of your home
Mileage:
My consultation fees include a 20mile round trip expense from GL20 8. Any additional miles are charged at 50p/mile.
